India’s quest for energy security and sustainable development rests a great deal on the ability to tap energy from the renewable sources. With the growing population and increasing power prices, managing waste & wastewater utilities are going to be a challenge in India.
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is one of the many important technologies for waste treatment at economical cost along with energy recovery. As this is governed solely by microbial activity, its proper development and optimization is very important. Most of the anaerobic plants in our country are started up by the flocculent sludge but it takes very long time to start-up, washout of seed sludge during UASB reactor start-up also remained a major concern.The major microbial population within Anaerobic Digesters is inherently unstable, thereby requiring that the system must be kept under close supervision and control and the maximum specific growth rates of the organisms are relatively low. Moreso, there is shortage of skilled labour to understand the operation and maintenance of these anaerobic digester. The washout of seed sludge during UASB reactor start-up also remains a major concern.
